The history department has begun a long time ago. In 1857, Muir and Meriliz company was founded. Scots Andrew Muir and Archibald Meriliz were doing in St. Petersburg wholesale trade of English lace, fabrics and other goods coming from the British Empire. In 1885, Muir and Meriliz was opened in Moscow. The shop was selling women’s hats and haberdashery. It was located in the same place where now there is TSUM -in three-story house on the corner of Petrovka and Theatre Square. In November 1900 a fire destroyed all the department. In December 1900 the store was opened at the new location. The store occupied the top three floors of the house of Khomyakov. In December 1918, the department store was nationalized and in 1933 the department received a new name – TSUM (Central Department Store). In 1955, TSUM was one of the first soviet department stores which has opened its doors to customers. Now TSUM is a place where each girl wishes to be, and not just to buy something, but at least to feel an unusual festive atmosphere of wealth and luxury. Particularly beautiful the department store looks during the Christmas holidays, the air is full of atmosphere of New Year and magic. Each year, the department store is decorated differently and very original. This place is pleasant even just to take a walk and feel yourself like in a fairy tale.
