Taiwan does not have a strong history of making whisky. The Kavalan Distillery, which was established in 2005, is in fact the first and only distillery on the island. Inspired by Taiwan’s relatively consumption of Scotch in recent years, Kavalan Distillery is a dream come true for Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee, the founder of King Car conglomerate. In 2008, the Kavalan Distillery released his first Kavalan whisky and since then, the company has not looked back. The distillery was named by Whisky Magazine as the World Icons of Whisky “Whisky Visitor Attraction of the Year” for 2011.
The distillery is the playground for the professional whisky research and development team, together with Ian Chang, a world-class master blender and Dr Jim Swan, a specialist. Taiwan’s tropical climate has been a key factor in the experimentation of the developing new flavours. The highly specialised distilling and blending skills that the King Car Group has cultivated for more than 3 decades through beverage manufacturing experience and knowledge together with the skills of Ian Chang and Dr. Jim Swan has produced magnificent products that caused a stir by surpassing three Scotch whiskies and one English whisky in a blind tasting organised in Leith, Scotland, to celebrate Burns Night in January 2010.
In 2012, Kavalan’s Solist Fino Sherry Cask malt whisky was named “new whisky of the year” by Jim Murray in his guide, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. In 2015, Kavalan’s Vinho Barrique expression was named the world’s best single malt whisky by World Whiskies Awards.
