In 1936, the city of Daytona Florida, U.S became the place where the world’s first auto race took place. However, in the minds of those who are seriously interested in watches, this name is associated primarily not with auto racing, but with one of the most recognisable, discussed, sold and desired chronographs in the world – Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.
Rolex Daytona mechanical watches have a rather long history. For the first time, this model was released in the second half of the 60s of the twentieth century. The inclusion in the name of the model the city of Daytona was not accidental. In 1959, the Daytona International Speedway was opened on the local beach especially for NASCAR races.
In 1962, Rolex became a partner of the 3-hour Daytona Continental sports car race (by 1966, the race was transformed into a 24-hour marathon, known today as 24 Hours of Daytona.) In 1963, the chronograph described above will appear with a tachometer scale on the bezel, which will be called the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph.
In 1965, Rolex re-released the same model called the Rolex Daytona Chronograph. Why did the watch change its name? According to one of the versions, in this way Rolex paid tribute to one of the first representatives of the brand – Sir Malcolm Campbell, who repeatedly set speed records on Daytona Beach.
The strict shapes of this model have already become iconic classics, as Rolex Daytona is perfectly combined with dresses and casual outfits, as well as with classic business suits.
