After months of speculation, it was confirmed that Oscar de la Renta will hand the creative direction of his eponymous brand over to Peter Copping.
In a prolific career that has spanned some 50-plus years, de la Renta, 82, has dressed everyone from first ladies, to virtually every celebrity on the red carpet. Known for his feminine, romantic frocks, de la Renta’s confections are a throwback to a different, more glamorous era, much like the designer himself. Graced with an indefatigable charm, de la Renta is the consummate old-school gentleman, a people’s person with a rolodex even more impressive than his spring collection.
“We appreciate the same things in fashion, in dressing women, in maintaining a certain quality. And Oscar is also passionate about gardening, art, antiques, beautiful things in general. I am sure I can FIT into his world and continue it,” Copping said to Vogue.
Copping will be responsible for all product lines, and will report to Alex Bolen, the chief executive officer of Oscar de la Renta (and de la Renta’s son-in-law), and de la Renta. His first showing will take place in February 2015 at New York Fashion Week, and he will work closely with de la Renta on the collection, according to a press realease.
