Oliver Rousteing: From Self Educated to Prodigy

A French Prodigy

Olivier Rousteing is a French Designer and has been at the helm of Balmain since 2011. He was only 24 years old when he was appointed artistic director, becoming the youngest creative director in Paris since Yves Saint Laurent.

Olivier Rousteing was adopted at the age of 5 months old and spent his childhood in Bordeaux with his adoptive parents. He moved to Paris to study in a renown fashion school, where he rapidly felt like his instructors didn’t know anything about fashion. That was when he decided to move first to Rome where he interned in a couture house and then to Milan where he worked for 5 years for Roberto Cavalli as an assistant before becoming a designer.

During his first years in Milan, he worked in nightclubs as a dancer to earn some pocket money. In 2009, he joined the Balmain house under Christophe Decarnin until his leave in 2011, which made Olivier the new artistic director.

At 31 years old today, he is the most followed French designer on the social media platforms, and is known to be friends with the « it-girls » such as the Kardashian clan, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, and many more.

The current stars of the men’s campaign are Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and when asked about social media, he states that “Being connected in every sense is the most important thing, […] You have to be connected to the world.”
