Is Fashion really art?

Is Fashion really art?

Some might say fashion is a decorative or applied art as opposed to fine art. However Fashion is an art form that should be remembered. Fashion can tell what people wore at a certain period just as painting can represent a period in the History. Fashion is one of the purest expressions of art because it is the manifestation of human art and communication on a daily basis. It helps communicate who we are, who we want to be, where we are going, and where we have been. Some exhibitions such as the one at the V&A and the one at the Metropolitan in New York are very relevant. Vogue editor in chief and fashion icon Anna Wintour helped integrate costume design as part of the permanent art collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Through her involvement in the museum, Wintour is contributing to the legitimization of fashion as fine art. Some designers are directly influenced by fine art. Fashion touched parts of the human soul, for example, Alexander McQueen, who is not only a designer, but known as an artist and an icon for his Savage Beauty show in 2011 and others. A piece of clothing can be as important as a painting because it described our personality or our society, just such as art can do. The art present in museums or in living environment can serve as an important tool to build our sense of being. The art people wear and surround themselves with affects their own sense of wellness and happiness.
Art reflects who we are and who we aspire to be. In that context, Fashion can be seen as a form of art.
