Ópera Garnier is one of the most characteristic buildings of Paris. Napoleón III ordered Charles Garnier to build it from 1858 to 1875 in a neoclassic style.
In january the 15th of 1875 was officially inaugurated under the name of” Academie nationale de la musique”
The celebration included the representation of the third act of La Juive, ofHalévy, some parts od Les Huguenots, of Meyerbeer, and one Divertissement which consisted of the recreation of the classic scene «Le Jardin Animé», of the ballet Le Corsaire (1856), with the music of Léo Delibes and the coreography of Joseph Mazilier.
it was a memorable ceremony which had the attendace of the president of the III french Republic, Patrice de Mac-Mahon, the spanish royal family , the lord-maire of Londres, and nearly 2000 guest from all Europe. One interesting thing is that tha author of the building, Charles Garnier, was not invited and even he worked for more than 15 years in the creation of the Opera, he had to pay its own ticket!
